Holy Week • Guided Prayer Retreat (2 April)
What is the good news (gospel) that we believe in? Is it merely “Jesus died for my sins”? Or is there more to it?
This week's readings shows us 4 different accounts of this good news (gospel).
reading for: 2 April
1 Corinthians 15:1-11
The Good News According to Paul
READ
Today we see the good news according to Paul, that the Corinthians received and now stand in (v. 1), the good news that we must hold fast to (v. 2) which Paul first received himself (v. 3).
Christ died for our sins just as the scriptures said (v. 3).
He was buried and raised from the dead on the third day (v. 4)
He was first seen by Peter, then by the twelve (v. 5).
Then he was seen by more than 500 followers, most were still alive when Paul was writing (v. 6).
Then James and the rest of the apostles saw him (v. 7).
Last of all, Paul Himself saw Him (v. 8).
Despite being the least of the apostles because of how he initially persecuted the church (v. 9). Paul became, who he is because of God’s grace and favour. A grace that worked within him and enabled him to work harder than any other apostles (v. 10).
This is the same good news that both him and the other apostles preached (v. 11).
REFLECT
Paul starts his account of the good news that Christ dying for our sins, buried and being raised from the dead were all according to the scriptures (v. 3-4). Then he goes into this account of who saw him first, Peter, the twelve, the 500 James, the rest of the apostles, before himself.
How does an added list of witnesses add to the validity of our good news?
What is the significance that Paul’s good news includes a lineage of eye witnesses?
Finally, what is the significance that Paul, a persecuted of the church and most unworthy of apostles saw and heard Jesus?
Wake up Strong
Pause in your day to Pray
Don’t go to bed wrong
